The house has a story of its own and here is what the owners have to say about this very special home....
"From my birth to youth I had lived in a wooden Thai house on stilts. Our house was not at all big or luxurious, but it was filled up with lives and love. When I grew up, if I travelled through the country, the most desirable places to stay were in a wooden house. Something I really feel comfortable and at home. The impressions of Thai house must have profoundly influenced on me, the choice of my study from under-graduated until post-graduated went not further than Archaeology, Museology and Cultural Heritage Management. Something got to do with conservation of old stuffs! (that is what my parents told to people). After several years staying abroad, worked as curator, visited thousands of museums, I dreamt to have my own traditional Thai house as an open-air museum.
We moved to Thailand and found a beautiful piece of land in the rice-paddies, where nobody believed that we could ever live there. Building project started in spring 2002 and in the middle of 2003 we moved in. When we moved in the house was not really ready, we added in more and more...like what you see now. I designed the landscape, the house and interior myself. I knew every shelves of wood as well as every tree in the garden. Most western furniture was from our former house in Amsterdam combined with Thai touch of lamps, lanterns, antiques, etc. In fact, we did not plan to leave this house anymore. It was meant to be our resting place.
Later, I got a job at university, gave lecture at post-graduated level in Cultural Management and Museum Management. During 10 years of working, this Thai house has been used for my lectures as a case study, a place for field-trip and work-shop, etc. Colleagues and students had visited as well some dignitaries, friends and local people. In other words, this Thai house had served its original purpose as an open-air museum where people can learn about traditional Thai house and Thai ways of life.
Words by mouth, the house has got its reputation, there were requests from filming studio to use as location for shooting a film and a period soap-series. Even to use as a pre-wedding location and a wedding reception place.
After enjoy living here for 13 years, it is time to say goodbye. It is very hard for us, especially me. Few obligations do not allow us to keep such a house but our good memories of the house are always there like how it was started... "
